Okkiy is a voice-based social media app designed to revolutionize how we connect online. With Okkiy, users can send voice messages, update their status, and engage with friends effortlessly. Our platform prioritizes user privacy with customizable privacy settings and offers innovative features like voice-to-text conversion. Okkiy aims to streamline communication and enhance user experience, making social networking more intuitive and enjoyable for everyone.

As the designer for Okkiy, my role was pivotal in bringing the vision of a voice-based social media app to life. My responsibilities included conducting user research, analyzing competitors, and creating user personas to understand the needs of Indian users who prefer voice communication over texting. I started with wireframing and then delved into UI/UX research, ensuring that every aspect of the app was intuitive and user-friendly. From concept to working prototype, I led the design process, ensuring that Okkiy met the expectations of our target audience and provided a seamless social networking experience.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, there emerged a pressing need for a social media platform that accommodated users’ preference for voice-based communication. Existing platforms lacked efficient voice messaging features, leading to a disconnect between users who preferred voice interaction and those accustomed to traditional texting. Additionally, with the Indian government’s ban on certain social media apps and evolving privacy concerns, there was a ripe opportunity to introduce a new, privacy-focused social networking solution. Okkiy aimed to address these challenges by offering a voice-based social media experience with robust privacy controls, catering to the evolving needs and preferences of Indian users.
Audio apps are poised to be the future of social interaction due to their ability to offer a more authentic and immersive experience. Platforms like Clubhouse, Discord, and Twitter Spaces have demonstrated the potential of audio-based communication, fostering real-time conversations and connections in a way that text-based platforms cannot replicate. Audio allows for more nuanced communication, including tone of voice and intonation, leading to richer interactions and deeper engagement.
Embarking on a 4 week Design Sprint for the Okkiy app project, we began with in-depth market research and competitor analysis, identifying key trends and unique features. Transitioning to UI/UX design, we crafted a user-centric interface. Prototyping allowed us to test concepts rigorously, followed by iterative cycles for refinement. Each phase seamlessly integrated with our timeline, ensuring comprehensive development of Okkiy’s innovative features. This holistic approach, from research to iteration, delivered a polished product reflective of our commitment to excellence within our established timeframe.
